Biography
Dr. Lindsey Welp is a saxophonist and educator based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Her playing has been described as “mesmerizing…(taking) the saxophone to levels our audience rarely sees”. Lindsey is passionate about community-centered artistry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and accessibility in music education.
Lindsey has received many solo musical accolades, including first prize in the LaGrange Symphony Young Artist Competition; two first prizes in the MTNA Young Performing Artist State Solo Competition; two-time North American Saxophone Alliance collegiate solo competition semifinalist; and third prize in the Elise Hall Competition for Emerging Saxophonists. Lindsey has been featured as a soloist with the DePauw University Orchestra, the Bowling Green State University Philharmonia, and the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Welp is the tenor saxophonist of the award-winning saxophone quartet Mixed Media, who won the Gold Medal in the 2022 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Mixed Media was also awarded first prize in the Coltman Chamber Music Competition in 2022 and the American Prize in Chamber Music Performance in 2023. Mixed Media is based in Georgia and actively performs and engages in the North Georgia arts community.
An advocate for the performance and curation of new music, Lindsey has commissioned composers such as Viet Cuong, Cory Brodack, Gemma Peacocke, John Anthony Lennon, and Cassie Chantel/Julien Berger, amongst others. Committed to broadening the contemporary music scene in Atlanta, Dr. Welp is a member of the Atlanta Contemporary Chamber Collective where she can be seen performing regularly in the metro Atlanta area. Dr. Welp also serves as the Director of Development for the ATLCMC.
Lindsey’s debut album, Stories We Tell, will be released in the Spring of 2025. Featuring works by Terzakis, Peacocke, Simon, Santos, Chantel/Berger, and traditional folk songs, this album features new works all alike in the theme of storytelling. A combination of new commissions, improvisatory works, and commercially non-recorded works, Welp explores the saxophonist’s role as a collaborator and community-minded musician.
An advocate for constructing community through collaborative music-making, Dr. Welp created the North Georgia Saxophone Ensemble in 2022. This ensemble consisted of 30 high school saxophonists from 16 different high schools surrounding the Athens, GA area. The group is no-cost, no-audition, with the goal of connecting passionate young saxophonists in North Georgia through weekly rehearsals and no-cost instruction. The ensemble is entering its next phase in Atlanta, Georgia, renamed as the Atlanta Youth Saxophone Ensemble. Applications for this group open in the Fall of 2024.
As an educator, Lindsey recently served as the Adjunct Instructor of saxophone at Terra State Community College. Lindsey has also served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the saxophone studios at the University of Georgia (where she was awarded an Outstanding Teaching Award in 2024) and Bowling Green State University. Dr. Welp has taught privately in Indiana, Ohio, and Georgia. Her students have gone on to be accepted into top music programs across the country and win positions in All-District and All-State Honor Bands.
